On 2–3 July 2026, the 9th International Academic Conference in the „Polish–Spanish Encounters" series will take place at the Lutosławski Manor in Drozdowo and at the University of Warsaw. This year's conference is devoted to the eminent Spanish writer Sofía Casanova (Zofia Lutosławska). The Faculty of Philology of the University of Białystok is among the co-organisers of the event.
This year's sessions will be held under the theme „Sofía Casanova (Zofia Lutosławska) – Translator of Reality". The conference is organised jointly by the Faculty of „Artes Liberales" of the University of Warsaw, the Faculty of Philology of the University of Białystok, and the Museum of Nature – Lutosławski Manor in Drozdowo. The event is held under the honorary patronage of the Embassy of the Kingdom of Spain and the Rector of the University of Białystok, Prof. Mariusz Popławski.
Among the invited guests are the Spanish author of a monograph on the writer, Dr Rosario Martínez Martínez (A Coruña); a representative of the descendants of the Casanova and Lutosławski families, Dr Hanna Zofia Libera (Essen); and the translator of the writer's work into Polish, Dr Ludmiła Furman (UwB, Białystok). The conference is coordinated by Dr hab. Jan Ciechanowski, Prof. UW (Faculty of „Artes Liberales"), and, on the Białystok side, by Prof. Anna Janicka (Department of Interdisciplinary Philological Research, UwB).
Sofía Casanova-Lutosławska (born 30 September 1861 in A Coruña, died 16 January 1958 in Poznań) — an eminent Spanish writer and war correspondent, and wife of the Polish philosopher Wincenty Lutosławski — has long been the subject of scholarly research conducted in both Polish and Spanish academic centres. Warsaw researchers are currently carrying out the NPRH project „A Critical Edition of Sofía Casanova's Chronicles on Poland and Russia for the Madrid daily «ABC», 1915–1944". The Białystok academic community, in cooperation with Polish and Spanish partners, has so far organised two scholarly undertakings concluded with conferences: the International Academic Conference „Sofía Casanova: Writer, a Personality of Spanish and Polish Intellectual Life" (June 2022) and the National Academic Conference „Wincenty Lutosławski and Literature: Aesthetic Connections – Philosophy – Reception" (October 2019). The July meeting in Drozdowo and Warsaw forms a natural continuation of this line of research.
We warmly invite you to take part in the conference.
