We are pleased to announce that in the completed evaluation of the quality of research activity for the years 2022–2025, the discipline of literary studies (literaturoznawstwo) at the Faculty of Philology of the University of Białystok was awarded category A, advancing from the B+ category granted in the previous evaluation. The discipline of linguistics (językoznawstwo), also cultivated at the Faculty, received category B+.
The evaluation, conducted by the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education, uses a five-level scale: A+, A, B+, B and C. Nationwide, 1,241 research categories were awarded across 280 institutions; 392 disciplines received category A and a further 106 received category A+. Białystok's literary studies thus joined the roughly 40 per cent of the most highly rated disciplines in Poland.
A research category is far more than a prestige distinction. Under the applicable regulations it directly determines an institution's rights to confer the academic degrees of doctor (PhD) and doctor habilitatus, to run doctoral schools, and it also affects the level of the ministerial subsidy. Category A confirms the high, internationally recognised standard of the research conducted, the quality of scholarly publications, and the genuine social and cultural impact of the Faculty's academic work.
The advancement to category A is the fruit of years of consistent research by the entire team of literary scholars — the result of publications with renowned presses and journals, completed research projects, and sustained editorial and publishing activity. We extend our thanks to all members of the Faculty, to our doctoral candidates, and to our collaborators, whose combined output made this result possible.
