The Faculty of Philology of the University of Białystok cordially invites you to a discussion with Professor Piotr Biłos — a scholar of Polish literature and head of the Polish Section at the Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales (Inalco) in Paris. The discussion, "On the Other Side of the Obstacle. Four Encounters with Truth and Fate in the French Novel," will take place on Wednesday, 17 June 2026, at 6:00 p.m. in Room 47 of the Faculty of Philology (Plac NZS 1). The event will be held in Polish.
The meeting offers an opportunity for in-depth reflection on the French novel in the context of existential struggles with history and identity. The conversation will focus on four works: La chambre des officiers by Marc Dugain, L'honorable correspondant by Ivan Sand, Un barrage contre le Pacifique by Marguerite Duras, and Chevreuse by Patrick Modiano.
The discussion takes up the question of truth and fate when confronted with limit situations. The passages under consideration invite reflection on the contrast between intimacy and the foreboding of catastrophe on the eve of the First World War, the moral dilemmas of the world of intelligence, the bitter disillusionment with colonialism, and the labyrinths of memory in which the boundaries between the past and a false identity dissolve.
Students, academic staff, and all lovers of literature are warmly welcome. Admission is free and open to all.
