International Centre for Phraseological and Paremiological Research initiated by Joanna Szerszunowicz was established at the Philological Faculty of the University of Bialystok in 2017. The aim of the Centre is to enable and foster international cooperation in the field of phraseology and paremiology. The objectives are realized by offering a chance of intercontinental exchange of research results, organizing conferences, symposia and other forms of cooperation within the projects conducted in the framework of the Centre activities. It aims to disseminate and popularize knowledge on phraseology and paremiology. The Centre also promotes young scholars’ works and facilitates their international career.
History
In July 2009, thanks to the initiative of Professor Yagi from Kwansei Gakuin University, the symposium “Phraseology 2009”, in which both Asian and European phraseologists participated, took place at Kwansei Gakuin University in Nishinomiya. The symposium rendered it possible for them to exchange views on phraseology. The idea of the centre is a continuation of the spirit of the symposium as well as of the project Research on Phraseology in Europe and Asia done by the University of Bialystok in cooperation with Kwansei Gakuin University. The logo of the Centre reflects differences in the perception of universally known objects – as it is the case of the prototypical image of the sun, which is to symbolize a variety of approaches to commonly discussed phraseological issues. The title of the project contains the word dialogue, which – as we do hope – will encourage scholars to voice their stands on various phraseological issues.

SZERSZUNOWICZ Joanna, The University of Bialystok (Head) – a graduate of Polish philology and English philology with a doctorate in Contrastive Linguistics; professor of the University of Bialystok, the focal research issues: phraseology, paremiology; culture-boundness of language, translation, mono- and bilingual phraseography; published two books and more than two hundred papers on phraseology in Europe, South America, Australia and Asia; a member of Europhras (ex-member of the Advisory Board, member of the Board), International Association of Paremiology (Vice-President of the General Assembly), The Japan Association of Phraseology as well as Polish linguistic associations (Tertium, TMJP); reviewer for several international journals; the author and coordinator of the project “Intercontinental Dialogue on Phraseology’ done in cooperation with Japan (2009–2011; 2011–2013; 2013–2015; 2015–2017)
